One of the fascinating aspects of the Book of Daniel is both the practical and spiritual application one gets from studying this work. Practically what we learn is the power of being faithful. As Daniel and the men were faithful God was able to rescue them from each of their present dangers. In every situation these four men chose to be obedient realizing that God is the ultimate authority and the giver of life.
We also learn through the foreign kings what pride does to a human being. For one king it drove him into a place of isolation. For another king it cause the demise of his kingdom.
There is another lesson in Daniel, which is mostly overlooked. That lesson being God’s eternal plan throughout history. God had revealed to Daniel on several occasions God’s future plans. For Daniel he was given the prophecy and was the one who would communicate those truths. These prophetic words were for both the near future of those who were in Daniel’s present life. They were also prophetic words of the coming of an eternal promise given by God.
We don’t like to talk about the end of time. What we like to enjoy is the present. As a person who calls Jesus Christ Lord, there is an eternal hope awaiting us. There will be a place with no pain, no mourning, no death and no isolation. This is the future hope that is promised. Death is not our destiny and nor is it the victor.
As we wrap up the Book of Daniel take time as you drive or wait for an appointment to reflect first on your obedience to Christ. Have you allowed God to intervene in each of your present dangers? Secondly, ask yourself have you thought about what is to come? God has an eternal hope awaiting all who love Him and have chosen to walk in obedience to their calling.
